April and May is a wonderful time of the year in the garden. It is the beginning of the change in season and things start to warm up and come alive! One the best events is the hatching of tulips!
Last year, with help from Maria and Chloe, we planted over 1500 tulip bulbs! They have been keeping warm in the soil since November and are now popping out! We planted early, mid and late; singles, parrots and doubles!
Did you know there are over 3000 varieties of tulips! During the 1600’s tulips caused quite a pandemonium in the 1600s. In the Netherlands, tulips were highly valuable and during this time, tulips were as expensive as homes! Although it is commonly thought that tulips originated in Holland, they actually originated in central Asia and were first brought to Turkey. from where they were then sent from Turkey to Holland around 1560.
Tulips carry many meanings: The meaning of tulips is generally perfect love. Like many flowers, different colors of tulips also often carry their own significance. Red tulips are most strongly associated with true love and are an ideal seasonal Valentine flower, while purple symbolizes royalty.
I find it very difficult to say which is my favorite, each bloom is a delight!
Our cutting garden here at Vintage and Flowers in Ebchester, Durham is where we grow all our organic blooms. A 30 minute drive from Newcastle, we’re worlds apart from the plastic wrapped supermarket flowers you might be used to. Everything is lovingly grown by us, tended to and giving back to the local community. We swap unsustainable plastic wrapping for paper, hessian or vintage ribbon.
Dates for our experience workshops are shared on our social media channels, newsletter and are available by appointment
